iGaming Business is probably the most important resource for those in the business of online gambling. The have recently put together an interesting report, and one that is very well timed for opponents of UIGEA.
Barney Frank has been leading the effort to repeal the 2006 UIGEA, which made it illegal for Americans to play at an online casino. This effort has been picking up momentum and the iGaming Business report is sure to give it boost. The report details the potential benefits for online gambling in the US, broken down state by state. The US is not recovering from the economic downturn as quickly as some other countries, and this means that all but two state governments will have a budget deficit this year. State lotteries have always been able to bring in extra money for state governments, and this report details the effect that an online casino, run by a state lottery commission, could have for these cash strapped states. New Jersey, already home to Atlantic City, seems to be the most likely state to be the first one with it’s own online casino, assuming that changes in federal law will be made to allow for it’s existence. Province run online casinos have been opening already in Canada, and with the exception of some technical problems, have been successful so far.
Now that it has been four years since the passing of the UIGEA, it’s difficult to find anyone who still supports it.

Even those who are opposed to online gambling still find the wording of the law too vague, and due to the nature of internet business, UIGEA is at best very difficult to enforce. The AGA was one of the chief supports of the act at first, but they are now finding that it has failed to help them in any significant way. Nevada’s Senator Reid has a good reason to keep the needs of the AGA as a top priority. Gambling, and the tourism that comes with it, is pretty much the entire basis for Nevada’s economy. Anything that hurts gambling hurts Nevada, so Reid was an initial supporter of the bill as well. Reid and the AGA have begun softening their positions recently though, since UIGEA hasn’t really done anything anyway. Despite the bill, Americans are gambling online anyway, and the AGA has realized that there is no getting around this. So, now some of the earliest supporters of UIGEA are now pushing for online poker to be legalized. Poker doesn’t make up a huge percentage of land based casino profits, so this concession wouldn’t really cost the casinos too much, if anything. This may soon lead to the law being repealed, and a time when Americans can once again play at www.jackpotcity.com/uk/.
